Washing a Ceramic-Coated Car in Winter

The Short Answer

Rinse the Salt Off Often, Wash It Gently

A ceramic coating makes winter washing easier because salt and slush do not bond as readily, but it does not make salt harmless. Rinse the lower panels and wheel wells often, hand wash or use a touchless bay on milder days, and dry the car before it freezes.

In this part of Ontario, the car spends months coated in road salt and brine. The coating is there to help you get that off quickly. It still has to come off.

The Routine

A Winter Wash That Works

Pick a mild day

Wash when it is above freezing if you can. Water that freezes on the paint, in the door seals or in the lock cylinders causes more trouble than a dirty car.

Rinse low first

The salt line sits on the rocker panels, the lower doors, the rear bumper and inside the wheel wells. Start your rinse there, and give the underside a spray if you have a way to reach it. That is where salt does its quiet damage.

Foam, then a soft mitt

A layer of car soap or foam loosens what the rinse missed. Wash top down with a clean mitt and rinse it often. Coated paint lets dirt slide off, so you do not need to scrub.

Dry the seals and handles

Wipe the door jambs, the rubber seals and the door handles before you drive off. Frozen doors and handles are the most common winter complaint after a wash.

Coating Wear

What Wears a Coating Down in Winter

Brush washes

Spinning brushes carry grit from the car before yours. They scratch coated paint and wear the coating. Skip them.

Harsh chemicals

Strong degreasers and some touchless wash chemicals can wear a coating faster than plain soap. If the water stops beading the way it did, tell us. It may be time for a decontamination wash.

Snow brushes and scrapers

A hard-bristle snow brush drags grit across the hood and roof. Use a soft brush or foam head and push snow off rather than scrubbing it.

FAQ

Common Questions

Does a ceramic coating mean I can wash less in winter?

It means each wash is easier, not that salt can sit forever. Salt and brine still need to come off the paint and the lower panels regularly.

Is a touchless car wash safe for a coated car?

It is gentler than a brush wash. Some touchless washes use strong chemicals that can wear a coating faster, so check with us about your coating and use them as a fallback, not a habit.

Can I wash when it is below freezing?

Water can freeze on the paint, in door seals and in locks. Wash on a milder day if you can, or use a heated self-serve bay and dry the car before you leave.

Should I top up the coating in winter?

Some coatings have a matching maintenance spray. Whether yours needs one, and how often, depends on the product. Ask us before adding anything.
