Get the Car Off the Street When It Snows
The City of Hamilton asks drivers to keep vehicles off the road during and right after a snowfall. Plows clear the full width faster, and your car is not plowed in or sprayed with slush. On designated through highways, parking is banned from 2 am to 7 am every day, winter or not.
What the City Says
Through highways, 2 am to 7 am
Hamilton designates certain roads as through highways, and parking on them is prohibited from 2 am to 7 am every day of the year so crews can clean streets, clear catch basins and make minor repairs. No permit exempts you. Signs at the City's major entrances announce the rule; individual streets are not signed.
Snow events
The City says roads are safer, faster and cheaper to clear without parked cars, and that cars on the street stop plows from clearing the full width. Its December 2017 winter release adds that moving cars off the street can reduce potential vehicle damage. Permit holders are strongly encouraged to park off the street during snow events.
A pilot in Ward 3
From February 4 to April 15, 2026, a Council-approved pilot restricted parking during winter events on four narrow Ward 3 streets: St. Clair Boulevard, Proctor Boulevard, Barnesdale Boulevard and Roseland Avenue. The City planned to review it after the 2026 season.
Why It Matters for Paint
Plow spray
A car at the curb takes whatever comes off the plow blade: slush, salt and sand, thrown at the side facing the road. Moving it saves a cold dig-out and a filthy flank.
Digging out safely
If the car does get buried, use a soft snow brush or foam broom, push snow off instead of dragging it across the paint, and keep shovels well away from the body. Our guide to clearing snow without scratching paint has the details.
Driveway habits
The City asks residents not to blow or shovel snow onto the road, and suggests piling driveway snow on the side the plow finishes on, so less is pushed back across the end of the driveway.
Common Questions
Can I park overnight on my street in winter?
It depends on the street. Posted signs set the rules and unsigned streets are generally unrestricted, but through highways ban parking from 2 am to 7 am all year, and other by-laws such as the 12-hour limit still apply. The City's parking line is 905-540-6000.
Will I be ticketed for parking on the road during a storm?
The City strongly encourages off-street parking during snow events. For the rules on your street, check the posted signs or ask the City.
Does plow spray damage paint?
Salt and grit left sitting on paint are the concern, and sand scratches if it is wiped off dry. Rinse first, then wash. A ceramic coating makes the rinse more effective.
